Travel Advise Travelling in/through Russia is safe and doable. Like travelling to any destination, it is wise to take some advise to heart: · Take Proper clothing. Because of the land climate, during summer, it can be very hot in the inner part of the Russian Federation (30 degrees celsius and up). In winter, on the contrary, it can be very cold (minus 30 celcius and colder). Because the low humidity those temperatures are better bearable than in western Europe.
· Before you leave, be sure that your pasport is valid for at least another 6 months. Take care of visa - if applicable - , well in advance of your trip. (For the Russian Federation and former Sovjet republics, we of RNCC can be of service for visa) · Always take copies of passport and visa with you and keep them in a different place than the originals. This can be a big time saver at police/customs with their formalities in the unfortunate case of theft or loss of the documents. (Which in any case already will consume a lot of your precious time) .
· Do not take to much cash with you. Beacause of the availability of cash dispensers or the possibility to pay with credit and or bank cards, in cities and developed areas, it is better to not take too much cash with you, taking loss or theft in account. Of course, take into account, that when you go (far) from the urban areas, that you have enough cash in the right currency. In any case, it is wise to not keep all your cash and valuables in the same place. Take care that you never carry your cash/cards/checques in sight. At airports, usually money change offices are present. Remind that these offices charge an amount for commission.
· When you are not an 'adventurous' type, be cautious using 'black' taxis; use official taxis or use public transportation. For the adventurous types, in the Russian Federation, it is commonly accepted to stop cars and arrange transportation for an acceptible amount of money. Make an arrangement with the driver about destination and amount of money. Of course, to be able to do that, you need knowledge of the Russian language. · For long trips, take water, toiletpaper, a good mug an maybe tea or coffee. Don't forget to take some food. · Be aware that most of the people only speak their native language, For the Russian Federation, it is advisable to be educated in the Russian language. · MIn general, cellular phones operate in cities and developed villages. In areas outside the cities and developed villages, there are few or no possibilities to use a normal cellular phone. Also take into account that using the cellular phone in foreign countries can be very expensive and that you will be badly suprised by a huge invoice from the service provider.
